35 Learning Centers on line in N.M.J.;
five more set to open in 2002

By Ill.·. Robert Bodenstein, 33°
Member of The Learning
Center Board of Governors

As the work of the new year begins, each member of our valley needs to stand a little taller after realizing the great strides our learning center has accomplished helping children overcome dyslexia. This great educational accomplishment not only teaches a child to read but it makes a youngster want to go to school as he or she no longer faces the stigma of the other children teasing them on their poor reading skills. The fact that the child wants to go to school eases the pressure on the parents thus making the family more functional.

When this high profile philanthropy was started, the goal was to have 55 learning centers in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. At this writing, we have 35 functional learning centers with another five coming on line in the year 2002. We presently have more than 900 children enrolled in all of our learning centers and that number will obviously increase as we open additional new learning centers in the 15 states that comprise the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. As I noted in my last article, every child in our valley’s learning center has scored higher in the reading tests since they started the program. This is why each member of our valley should get behind this great philanthropy by helping our program either financially or by volunteering their services to help our great leaning center.

The cost to support one youngster in the learning center program is $5000 per year. Why not have your symbolic lodge or group make their goal supporting one or more children in your learning center at the cost of $5000 per child per year? You should be further motivated by knowing that over 90 cents of every dollar contributed goes to the direct education of these youngsters. No organization is as strong as when they have a project to support, especially when it is a project to help a child.

Your Teddy Bear Club will have the 2001 stickers for your plaques available through February 2002 for a donation of $100 to the learning center. Why not keep your plaque up-to-date by sending your donation now!

Have you noticed the red apple pins the ladies of our valley are wearing? It’s still not too late to purchase one of these pins for your lady. The sparkling red crystal apples look good for any occasion and can be purchased from any board of governors member or the Scottish Rite office.

We have all heard the saying “Don’t keep your light under a bushel basket.” Let’s remove that basket and let all the world know that we give the best educational agenda to overcome dyslexia and it just happens to be free. Let this be our slogan as we make school enjoyable for youngsters while they learn to read thus making school something to look forward to instead of dread and in turn this takes the pressure off the entire family and allows the child to maintain regular school attendance.
